April News

From the office…

TCAP—The year is moving  – FAST!  It is hard to believe it is already time for TCAP test.  The students will be taking the TCAP test the last full week of April.  Please be sure to encourage your child to do their best.  15% of the students’ final grade in reading/language arts, math, science and social studies will come from their TCAP scores.  To be successful the student should have at least 8 hours of sleep the weekend prior to TCAP as well as each night of the test, eat a good breakfast, be present and on time for school each day, and try their best.  If your child has test anxiety encourage them to take a deep breath, focus, and to just do their best.

Trips—We will be planning several trips in April and May.  Some of the trips are during the week and some are on Saturdays.  We hope your child will be able to experience these by having good behavior, doing their work and following the rules.

Dyllis Springs Elementary is still scheduled to open for the 2012-2013 school year.  It will be located on Ollis Road in Oliver Springs and will combine the Oliver Springs Pre K—4 grades and Dyllis’ K-4 grades.  The 5th grade students from both schools will attend Oliver Springs Middle.

Spring Registration—We will have spring registration for Pre K , K, out of county and out of district  beginning Monday, April 30—Friday, May 11.  Students registering for Pre K will need to provide a copy of their 2011 tax return.  Pre K and Kindergarten registering students will also need to bring their birth certificates, social security card, immunization and physical record.  These forms will need to be completed before they can attend in the fall.

Any child that will turn 4 before September 30 will need to register for Pre K.  Any child that will turn 5 before September 30 will need to register for Kindergarten.

Non-request—During spring registration parents may request their child not be placed in a particular teacher’s class.  A parent may also request their child not be placed in the same class as another student.  The school will try to honor  these request but cannot guarantee each request will be granted.  All requests must be in writing.

Talent Show Results  This year’s Talent Show was the first in many years.  The students first had to audition.  Those that made it past this round performed in front of the student body  as a dress rehearsal to their final performance and the judging on Thursday, March 29.

The judges had a difficult task ahead of them as the performers took to the stage.  There were 3 categories:  1st—4th grades, 5th—6th grades and 7th—8th grades.  The winners were Savanna Evans—singing (1-4), Hannah Henley, Tiffany Boswell, and Rosemarie Orange—dancing  (5th—6th ), and Megan Moran—singing(7th –8th).  Runner ups were Trey Boswell—dancing (1-4), Eli Charles—playing the guitar (5th—6th), and Jesse Stephenson—playing the drums (7th –8th).  All the participants were awesome.  Thank you to everyone who performed and delighted us with your talent.  Oliver Springs Elementary is loaded with talent as these students exhibited in the show.

Mr. LaLoggia and Mrs. Hubbard did a great job preparing the students and doing all the behind the scene work.  Mrs. Tracy Jordan did her usual fantastic job of decorating the stage.  Mrs. Huckaby was the master of ceremonies for the show and did an awesome job.  Other teachers were instrumental in the success of the program:  Mrs. Nipper, Widner, Martha Smith, and Henry.

DONATIONS NEEDED  Each year the students who have excelled are recognized at the Honor’s Day and Attendance Day celebrations.  Each year we have people in the community who want to make a difference in a child’s life because that child has chosen to reach for the stars and strive for excellence.  Community members or individuals may donate money to be given at our end of the years programs.  If you would like to make a donation please send your money to the office before May 1st.
